Alternatives

The table below compares the 3 alternatives using information supplied publicly by STV Inc., the company conducting the feasibility study for the DRPA:

  NJ-3 NJ-2 NJ-1
Description Phase I - This service would begin in Center City Philadelphia and follow the existing PATCO line to Camden, NJ, where it would diverge from the existing PATCO line onto Conrail's existing railroad right-of-way to Glassboro. The alignment could be fully grade separated like the existing PATCO Line, or partially grade-separated at major crossroads, with crossing gates at smaller crossroads. Partial grade-separated would require a Modified PATCO vehicle powered by a third rail on the existing alignment between Camden and Philadelphia, and an overhead power source on the remainder of the alignment to Glassboro. Small local stations and large park-and-ride stations would be provided to allow residents to access this service close to home or at a more automobile friendly location with adequate parking facilities.
Phase II - This extension would be a separate, commuter-oriented limited service from Millville to Glassboro. Passengers would transfer to the Phase 1 service in Glassboro for travel north to Center City Philadelphia. The Phase II service would be entirely in the Conrail rail right-of-way and initially operated with a diesel vehicle that could eventually be electrified and converted to PATCO or Modified PATCO type service with through trains to Philadelphia.
Phase I - This new service would begin in Center City Philadelphia and follow the existing PATCO line to Camden. NJ. In Camden the new service would diverge from the existing PATCO line and travel south alongside of 1-676 and NJ Route 42 to NJ Route 55. It would continue south in the median of NJ Route 55 to Exit 50 in Glassboro. The alignment would be entirely grade separated. Access to this service would be primarily at park-and-ride lots
Phase II - This extension would be a separate, commuter-oriented service from Millville to Glassboro. Passengers would transfer to the Phase I service in Glascboro for travel to Center City Philadelphia. The Phase II service would operate primarily in the median of NJ Route 55, but south of the Cumberland Mall would be on the existing Conrail rail right-of-way. Initially Phase II would be operated with a diosel vehicle, but it could eventually be electrified and convened to a PATCO type service with through trains to Center City Philadelphia.
This new service would begin in Center City Philadelphia and follow the existing PATCO line to Camden, NJ. In Camden the new service would diverge from the existing PATCO line and travel south alongside of 1-676 and NJ Route 42 to the Atlantic City Expressway- It would continue south in the median of the A.C. Expressway to Williamstown at NJ Route 536- The alignment would be entirely grade separated and along major roadways, not through local towns. Access to this service would be primarily at park-and-ride lots.
